01The silence

Nobody has ever told you why, and above the waist that is a scandal. Below it, there is not even a system.

Above the waist

You were measured in a shop by someone who then sold you whatever was on the floor in a size they stock. Or a free calculator gave you one number and no idea what to do with it. The band rides up, the straps dig, the cup gaps, the wire sits on tissue. All four have mechanical causes. Nobody named one.

Below the waist

There is no sizing system at all. Knickers are sold S to XXL, invented separately by every brand, with no relationship to any measurement of your body. So you guess, buy 5, and keep 2. Roll, lines, outline, chafe — every one has a cause in the rise, the gusset, the cut or the seam.

02The mechanism

Every complaint has a cause, and it is almost never you.

This is the whole method. You name what goes wrong; we name the band, the cup, the wire, the rise or the seam responsible, and then the specific garment that solves it.

  • The band rides up at the back

    The band is too loose, so the straps are doing work they cannot do.

  • The cup gaps at the top

    You are full-on-bottom, in a cut drawn for evenly distributed tissue.

  • The wire pokes into you

    The wire is narrower than your root, so it sits on tissue instead of behind it.

  • The waistband rolls down

    The rise is too low for your ratio, so the band climbs to your narrowest point and folds.

  • Lines show through everything

    Seam placement and fabric weight. Going up a letter size will not fix either.

  • Your thighs chafe in briefs

    The leg elastic is too narrow and the gusset is pulling the cut inward.

03On the garment

We draw it on the garment, never on you.

No photograph, no scan, no body. The canonical picture here is a labelled drawing, because the answer lives in the construction and not in how you look.

  1. 1The bandIt carries the whole weight, not the straps. Loose band, and the whole thing rides up your back.
  2. 2The wire channelA wire that sits on breast tissue is too narrow for your root, or the cup is too small. Never a fault of yours.
  3. 3The centre goreIt should lie flat against your sternum. Standing away from you is the cup, not the gore.
  4. 4The cup seam and apexWhere the seams put the volume. Gapping at the top means an even cut on a full-on-bottom shape.
  5. 5The strapStraps take 10 percent of the load. If they are grooving your shoulders, the band underneath has given up.

  1. 1The waistbandRolling is a rise problem, not a size problem. A band sitting on the widest part of you has nowhere to go but down.
  2. 2The riseThe distance from waistband to gusset. Matched to your waist-to-hip ratio, it stays put. Wrong, it cuts or rolls.
  3. 3The gussetToo narrow and the leg elastic pulls inward. That is what makes the front outline you did not want.
  4. 4The leg elastic and front cutChafe and visible lines are decided here, by elastic width, seam placement and fabric weight.
